On a Steelhead we Ride

Cause they are wanted…preferably alive!! It is not peak fall season yet but salmon are officially off my target list. The water levels could use a boost to help are steelhead up the river but things are off to a good start for the conditions. The trout bite seems to be temporarily off as they spawn but the post spawn bite should pick up in a couple weeks.

The fall colors are as good as they will get and the river is almost tranquil again as the salmon crowds have moved on. Come up and enjoy a day on the river. Fall steelhead is potentially the most challenging thing with fins for the fly angler in Michigan. A fall Steel can humble you but will always educate and make you a better angler.

So come get some!!

Some love for the Ho’s!!

This is the End…but keep smilin!!

2017 Salmon season is over for this fishing guide. There are enough salmon if you include your coho to keep an angler busy for a bit longer. There is enough fall steel starting to show up that I have personally shifted my focus to chrome and salmo trutta.

The weather is so nice I am starting to worry about our fall steel set up ( there is always at catch 22) but some are showing up despite the water levels and water temps. Are we going to even have a fall at this point? November is almost here and it is 60 degrees still….crazy!!

Enjoy the quiet and peace the river brings with the more challenging fish that enter are river in November through December. Fall steelhead should never be a numbers game it should be about truly challenging yourself as an angler and bringing yourself truly closer to our targets. Honestly there is no other fish that will literally stare you down sometimes….besides maybe a salmo truttasorus lol. Come check it out folks!!

Go Fish!!

Big Time

The salmon are in thick, the trout are hungry, and the weather is amazing. The salmon are in thick, the trout are hungry, and the weather is amazing. There just isn’t much else to say gang!! Did I need to mention how nice the weather is for mid October!!

The salmon numbers are starting to dwindle but there are still enough around to have a day at it. Salmon fishing should continue for another couple weeks at this rate. Egging for trout is game on as the crowds decrease. Weekends are still busy but the week days are no longer crazy. Over the next few weeks streamer fishing should pick up as the kings thin out and soon we should start to see some real fall steelhead!!

Cast a line!!

Peaking!!

Not really much new to say folks and no news can be good news. Salmon are thick in the river, the trout bite has been good and the river has given a lot of people wonderful memories this September. This should continue for a couple more weeks and we can get to the fall steelhead and trout game!!

It almost hard to believe the weather is this nice and the fishing is this good. If are new to the game, introducing, reintroducing, bringing up a loved one, taking a beautiful lady out on amazing experience then book a trip and get up here. Now is the time.

I can not stress enough this time of year share, respect, protect and enjoy our rivers.

Full Contact

The salmon fish is coming into peak season!! Everything is busy this time of year. From the river to the local gas stations. Please just be aware of this and give yourself some extra little patience. If everyone does then everybody will have a better experience this 2017 salmon season.

Go down to the river at basically any access, take a small hike upstream or down and you should find some big fish. This should continue for another month or so before things slow down. Do not overlook the wonderful trout fishing around and mostly behind the big kings. One more note before I wrap up this little report/blog. For the record I have never ever seen a real egg sucking leach…..ever!!!

Share, protect and enjoy our rivers!

Their Here

They are here everywhere is a better description of the current situation. Down stream with hardware, skein, and flies salmon have been the target for awhile. I prefer salmo trutta myself and have been ignoring the brutes but the time has come for change for the month at least. There is great risk for great rewards on the early salmon game. Your fish are a much better quality, the weather is amazing, the salmon crowds are not here yet are the rewards. Lack of fish from the unpredictability of the early run is your only true con. Which isn’t often but can be a huge risk. During peak season an angler can survive on plan C, D, E and so on. This time of the year you may only have a plan A!!Trout fishing is great this month in many different formats. Day or night from egging during the day to wake flies at night and all the good stuff in between (terrestrials, streamers). It is a wonderful month to fish with multiple target species so get out spread the fun, respect each other and love it!!

Get Ready

The end of August is all ready here!!! Where does the time so quickly go? Chasing Brown trout all night the past few months could be an answer. This will be my last week or so of mousing or lights out fishing. Anglers can fish after dark for trout well through September with good success. I myself must shift gears towards the migration of Chinook salmon that invades are rivers over the next few months. These big fish will be arriving soon as well as the crowds that follow them. There is a absolute shit ton of debate over these fish and I am not going to get into any of it. As long one isn’t breaking any laws and being respectful to the river, fish, and other anglers….then have fun and!!!

What!?!?

It is a good thing I love to fish cause catching hasn’t been good of late for this dutch Angler. Don’t worry folks the river and fish are doing just fine getting the best of me lately. Anglers are getting fish though!! Night fishing and terrestrials are still the bread and butter of methods of the fly angler even though it may start to sound redundant.

Now for some non fishing pics. Figure I would take this opportunity to show off a little bit of Michigan’s wildlife and introduce my walking buddy as well as my best friend.

Next week back to fish pics!!

Michigan Hog nose or the deadly Michigan cobra.

The Dog Days

Here we are in the midst of summer and it is a beautiful here in Michigan. The big dry fly hatches are finishing up on the Pere Marquette leaving us the after dark hours to play on the river. Terrestrial fishing will keep things busy when the lights are on, nymphs and wet flies will keep the rod bent for those who like to work on their tan.

Be patient and don’t let your confidence drop. This time of the year can be difficult to fool are slimy friends. With water temps peaking and canoe traffick very heavy at times. Take it with grace and focus on the fact we love to fish and not just catch fish. When the fishing gets tough get out and fish, and become a better angler as the result.

Fish well!!

A Visit to the Forest

The hexagania hatch is over on the PM and we all get to wait for another year for the party to begin. After dark fishing should only start to improve over the next couple months. Also the hopper fishing should also start to trend upward as we get into the heart of the summer months. Please be aware of your water temps and mindful of our Brown fishy friends. Land your fish as quick as possible to reduce stress on our friends while summer heats up.

On a quick side note. Michigan not only has amazing fishing but amazing live music opportunities across the state over the summer. I just thought I would share one of my other passions for a quick second. Electric Forest Festival always has a wonderful amount of culture, food and most important some top notch Jam Grass brought to us by The String Cheese Incident and many more live musical acts.

Get out there and love life!!
