Water In Sky

Thunder calls and rain falls, migrating flies equal more river guides, let’s hope the brown trout rise!! I hope all managed through the recent heat wave well and found some Michigan waters to stay cool this past holiday weekend. The blue gills are bedding, the lupine is blooming, southerners are returning to their northern lake cottages, and mayflies are gathering in the evening along the riverside thick as a heavy snow….summer is here!!

Gray Drakes are covering the river corridor with spinners leaving little time for things like fishing reports. If you have a passion for trout now is your time to get to the river or take an evening guide trip and get educated on what all the excitement is about. I will return soon with a report but for now…here is your flie of the month and a few fish pics. Sorry for the short report but the fishing is just more enjoyable!!

Most Events Aren’t Planned

Memorial Day is on it’s way and so comes the summer months of trout fishing!! With the summer comes watercraft permit season on the Pere Marquette. Just a reminder to all the personal canoes, kayaks, rafts and driftboats coming to visit our watershed. You may reserve online or walk into the local Forest Service office and purchase a watercraft permit to float the river between Memorial and Labor day weekend. Now let’s talk a little fishing.

Hendrickson’s, sulphurs, yellow sally’s and drakes all are using the river for their dance and the trout are taking notice. The bugs are still isolated to your better sections of water but within days should start to migrate through almost the entire watershed. The heat wave called for this weekend could make things very interesting…let’s just hope it doesn’t get to hot.

Happy Holiday!!

Mothers Nature

The steelhead are almost finished with their 2018 spring migration, the bugs are starting to pop, the fry and par are out everywhere, and summer is on the way. The past week has been beautiful and has fished fantastic!! I hope everyone got a chance to spend some quality time with moms this weekend and Happy mother’s day mom!!

You can say goodbye to our spring steelhead, there are some isolated steel gravel around still feeding trout but for the record our 2018 run is finished. You may get the opportunity at a dropback on a streamer or surprise yourself with a summer run at night but for most of us, see ya in fall Michigan steelhead .

The salmo trutta is our game from here until September!! The past week streamers have been the best morsel to get wet. The bugs are popping fast though and as the water clears fish should start to take notice. Sulphurs and drakes should show up in the next week based on temps. Streamers will hold if we continue to get enough surprise showers to keep the river stained. If not, things will start to go nocturnal…and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing lol.

Love your Mom and catch a fish!!

Sunshine of Your Feeling

What a great week here on the Pere Marquette!! Beautiful weather and warm rains really put a good disposition on our trout and remaing steelhead, supplying us with a great week of angling. From our trout opener last Saturday to our PMTU Cinco Da Mayo Banquet, it was a joy to see friends and familiar faces getting in on bite and supporting the Pere Marquette Watershed.

The spring steelhead migration continues and although it won’t last for long there should still be some good targets over the next week. My choice of fishing these big bows at this point is streamers only, with the hope of a dropback or an aggressive buck trying to kill your fly. Wearing shorts and sandals fishing browns with a great chance of a steelhead smoking your fly, sure you can bottom bounce or indie fish but I will only be tossing streamers for steel at this time.

The trout are out and will play in one way or another. Eggs are still a major menu option behind the steel buffets. The fry and par patterns have ruled the boat this past week with the help of rain. Streamer fishing should hold and be decent to great over the next few weeks, weather dependent of course. Soon most of us anglers attention will be diverted and dry fly fishing should start to produce. Hendricksons are starting and sulphurs should soon follow!!

Sorry for the delay…..April’s fly of the month!!

Go Fish!!

Everything In Its Right Place

The water looked great, the water temps where perfect, the weather was gorgeous, traffic was light, steelhead where plentiful, and trout had the munchies. This past week the Pere Marquette’s puzzle fit together perfect and everything was in its right place. It was a wicked start for April and it finally feels, looks, and smells like it should.

The spring steelhead migration seems to have peaked this past week. My assumption is things will slow down quickly with it being this warm and this late into April…but hey one never knows for sure. There should be plenty of good opportunities for steel this week but these fish won’t linger long and next week I would assume those opportunities will return to the big lake. No those jumping steelhead are not eating flies they are just happy to go home. Steel are nipping eggs, alvin, and nymphs around the gravels and holding water. Streamers are getting the dropbacks and more aggressive males in the packs behind the ladies. This being the most exciting way to target these brutes!!!

Now for the trout program. Eggs, eggs, eggs and a little of everything is the menu. Get away from steel and a streamer, stone nymph or wiggler might work but the river is full of orange candy at moment. The Alvin are starting to ball up the bugs are starting to fly and next week other techniques should start to fall back into the fold but for now eggs, eggs, and eggs will fool most of our trout.

Go enjoy a watershed.

The Fast and Furious

The steelhead run of 2018 is set to be a fast and furious one. Just like our spring. We seem to have skipped spring and gone directly to summer in just seven days….is that possible? A week ago we had four inches of snow and ice mixed, now it is seventy and blues skies. After last week’s snow has melted we have our water add a few sunny days to warm the water and like that the steelhead run is in full effect. The trout love it and so do the people fishing the river this week…hurry it will not last long.

I am not sure how long the steelhead run will last at this rate. They had a long wait to get in the watershed this year and are going to do thier thing and leave fast. The warm water temps will also make things a fast event forcing our steelhead quickly back to the big pond. Things should be good for the rest of the week then it may get tough. Fortunately we have Brown trout.

The salmo trutta have seemed to have had a good winter and look great this spring. The buffets around the steelhead gravel hold their main interest still. The fry and streamer bite is a definite happening once away from said gravels though. We are starting even to see a bit of bug activity with black stones flying about daily now!! Surface fishing is soon on its way!! I hope everyone gets out and enjoys the beautiful trout and rivers, that we all share, and this great state has to offer on the our opener this weekend.

Good luck to all!!

A Special Weather Warning!!

I am not really into records unless the are vinyl, but we must be setting some sort of record with this special spring weather. It is easy to forget what country we are in at times this April. Even with the snow, ice, hail, and severe winds there have been moments of luck on our side and fish have been caught.

The spring steelhead migration should swing into full gear the remainder of April. The run is late this spring and I feel for the early crowd, I really do, with the weather it has been just brutal. The positive spin is steelheading should be great through the rest of April as well as the weather and the trout bite!!

A Day in the Life

We all hope the last of winter is over and officially behind us. This last weekend proved winter hasn’t given up but I get the feeling that even with a few more cold days ahead that somewhere, a large person is about to sing. Trout are about and steelhead are migrating.

Eggs, nymphs, salmon fry, and streamers seem to be all exciting the appetite of the local browns. While the visiting steel seem to be into the eggs and underwater insects of the river. Trout fishing has been decent to fantastic at times, and steelhead fishing is improving daily as the weather improves and the watershed is finally getting some water. All signs point to a great late April of fishing and catching so come up and get in on fun. I still have some great April dates available so let’s get together and enjoy the river!!

Out Like a Ram

Well this is not the first nor the last time Michigan weather will fool you…i wish it was a joke but it isn’t. We can hope that this is the last of winter, fingers are crossed and hope is high. The river is still there and some will still fish.

Steelhead where starting to show up and the trout bite was heating up. This weather should put a pause on things but once the weather passes everything should pick back up. Fishing the deep water around the spawning steel is steel the main event still but a streamer can have its moment amongst all the eggs.

Brew some hot jasmine flower green tea, take a Sunday drive, and the last white winter covering. You may even get lucky and see a Bald Eagle eating a dead dear…just proves nobody should pass on a free meal.

Let there be no more snow!!

Oh Ginger Snap

The wonderful world of ginger. Let’s stop and ponder all the things that the beloved root ginger improves upon. The list starts…Ginger snaps, pickled ginger, ginger bread people, ginger bread cities, ginger ale, deep fried ginger, ginger beer, ginger candy, ginger masala, ginger butter, and fishing.

Before the Roman Empire was around people have been using ginger to improve their health as a folk medicine or our food as a spice. Salmo trutta are also very fond of this flowering plants delicious root. Yes for millions of years ginger has been improving the health and tempting the taste buds of our fishy friends. So what is all this ginger jabber for. Well it just so happens to be the flavor of this month’s pattern.
