Joy
We want you to be happy cause these are your steelhead too!! There is steel in the Pere Marquette watershed if you know where to look. The angler to fish ratio could be higher but under these conditions one can not complain. A little water would go along way at the moment. If we dont get some soon the river will cool down and we will miss that sweet spot for our fall steel to migrate. They will still come but it will be more of a trickle instead of any big waves of fish.
Streamers have been my go to as long as the angler is game but bobbers have been producing the most. Swing flies are also getting it done and producing some trophy steel. There just are not a huge number of steel in the system then add angling pressure and less than ideal conditions, and steelhead tend to get back to their roots and behave trout like making us cover more water and different techniques.
Fall steelhead can be frustrating that is a promise but when you succeed the reward is far more gratifying. Also it is one of the best opportunities to really make yourself a better angler. Any method you feeling lacking in your arsenal, now is a great time to practice cause you will be fishing most of the mostly…not catching. Go outside and take a walk in the woods!!
