The Very First Time

We are in the heart of our winter. Which means this lousy cold weather is half way finished for us warm blooded folks. Fishing has been decent on the right days but even with the perfect set up, winter days are only going to produce a limited number of fish generally and we are in the heart of our winter. The river can be a truly tranquil place this time of the year helping make up for some of that cold nonsense January brings. Even a fair weather fellow has to admit that.

This is the first monthly award for a fly pattern ever!! On this report lol. This will be a recurring award based solely on one merit only. That sole merit will be whatever pattern I personally saw produce the most memorable experience of the month in my boat. Also occasionally it may just qualify as educational!! So let’s get down to the nitty gritty and get the show on the road!!

The Fly of the Month for January

Tom Lynch’s Triple D

Tied by Brad Turner in the flavor of nightcrawler

Why you ask? My response is simple.

Well done on all fronts Turner for making this month’s must memorable moment happen.

Turner and Hooch

With the weather and other obligations I haven’t been on the water a ton but when I have gotten out I have seen it pay well. The PM has been mostly unfishable with the last drop in temps but that should change with the up coming forecast. Luckily in Michigan we have many rivers to chose from.

Tom Lynch, Brad Turner and myself made the short trek down to the Muskegon for a fun run and what a river in January!! Normally this beautiful watershed is just a little to busy for me but in January it just isn’t and having very stable water temps with plenty of food making a nice winter salmo trutta fishery. On top of that the Muskegon harbors some serious targets as Brad and Tom proved and I tried.

28.5 inches of Muskegon Brown trout on the fly Brad twisted up the prior evening!!

Two old friends getting it done.

New Year Resolutions!!!

I hope everyone had wonderful times bringing in the New Year!! Now I am going to use the fresh year and make a few resolutions by making few changes to the report. First I will be adding some basic info starting today and I a will be getting back to this shortly. Second once the season gets going I will be updating weekly from now on.

The new info will be incorporated at the bottom of the report and will include water temps, water levels and water clarity. This info will be labeled with the according watershed which is just going to be the Pere Marquette for now but should grow in the future. Also there will a fly of the month award handed by my peers and I….we will see how goes.

Get out and fish with friends, family and start building all the new great memories and bullshit of 2018 folks.
